The Better Hour Groups: A Way for Christians to
Engage Your Community and To Become Unique Resources for
Bringing Reconciliation and Healing to a Broken World
All that is necessary for the triumph of Evil is
for good men to do nothing – Edmund Burke
The Whole Church Taking The Whole Gospel To The
Whole World – is a theme that has worked throughout
most of Christendom in the West and the Protestant Ethic
was very real around the world, particularly in North
America, Europe, New Zealand and Australia. That is
up until about fifty years ago.
Since then Christendom has retreated and we live
in a very different world. In the world of today
which looks a lot more like the first three centuries of
the Roman Empire, how can Christians advance this theme
in the face of aggressive Paganism, aggressive
Secularism and other world religions such as Islam?
Christians have become deer in the headlights. What are
Christians to do? What is God’s purpose of our lives?
What can one person do to bring reconciliation and
healing to a broken world?
- Through an eight session course of which the
project is the key part, a small group of Christians
can transform their community into a much better
world – “the better hour”.
- There is also a BETTER HOUR EVENT that can use
the PBS Home Video – THE BETTER HOUR: The Legacy of
William Wilberforce as a community event around
which a group of Christians can organize to improve
the world around their community.
The Course
The goal of the course is for Christians to make this
a better world for our respective nations, states and
provinces, cities and your community following Jesus’
command to be “The Salt of the Earth” and “The Light of
the World” so that the our communities can thrive and
flourish and people can live life to the full as Jesus
promised in John 10:10.
The Event
Virtually everyone wants to live in a better world.
The goal is that your group can invite and show
hospitality to others and engage them in a conversation
by merely inviting them to watch a one hour film – THE
BETTER HOUR: The Legacy of William Wilberforce – to see
how William Wilberforce was able to bring people
together because of his faith and get them to create a
better and more justice world for all people,
particularly through the fight that he led in Parliament
for the abolition of the slave trade and the
emancipation of all slaves in the British Empire.
The Project
The Project is a key part of the Course and will
require about an hour of a week to research and write.
From the first week, there is a strong emphasis on the
Project and the presentation at the end of the course.
